NFPA 2112

Flame-resistant clothing for industrial personnel exposed to short-duration thermal events from fire.

Requirements & test methods

NFPA 2112:2023 sets design, performance, testing and certification requirements for flame-resistant clothing used by industrial personnel exposed to short-duration fire hazards.

ASTM F2700

Measures heat transfer under combined convective and radiant exposure, as received and after 3 cleaning cycles.

Body-fabric HTP limits for contact and spaced sensor arrangements:

Heat-transfer performance of body fabric
ArrangementMinimum HTP
Spaced6.0 cal/cm² (25 J/cm²)
Contact3.0 cal/cm² (12.6 J/cm²)

ASTM D6413/D6413M

Measures vertical-flame response during a 12 s burner exposure, before and after the required cleaning.

Body fabric: char length ≤ 100 mm; afterflame ≤ 2 s; no melting or dripping.

Heat resistance and shrinkage

Assesses material condition and dimensional change after 5 min at 260°C (500°F).

Body-fabric shrinkage ≤ 10% in either direction. Checks melting, dripping, separation and ignition.

Garment evaluation & certification

ASTM F1930

Tests standardized specimen garments on an instrumented manikin during a 3 s simulated-fire exposure.

Predicted second- and third-degree body burn (%), plus breakopen observations.

Garment certification

Covers construction, closures, components and product information.

Independent certification of the finished garment.
