ASTM D6413
Checks flame resistance before arc testing.
Char length < 150 mm; afterflame < 2 s.
Arc-rating test for clothing materials
ASTM F1959/F1959M-24b measures the arc rating of flame-resistant materials and material combinations under a controlled open-air electric arc.
Checks flame resistance before arc testing.
Char length < 150 mm; afterflame < 2 s.
Exposes flat, vertical specimens to a controlled arc at approximately 2,100 kW/m², or 50 cal/(cm²·s).
Arc rating in cal/cm² for the tested single layer or layer combination.
Determines the arc rating from the lower applicable ATPV or EBT result.
Arc-rating endpoints:
| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ATPV | Energy associated with a 50% probability of reaching the predicted second-degree burn threshold. |
| EBT | Energy associated with a 50% probability of material breakopen. |
