NFPA 1950

PPE for technical rescue, EMS and wildland firefighting

Requirements & test methods

NFPA 1950-2025 sets requirements for personal protective equipment used in technical rescue, emergency medical operations and wildland or urban-interface firefighting.

Garment category

Covers technical rescue, emergency medical, wildland/urban-interface and applicable multifunctional garments.

Thermal and barrier requirements depend on the garment category.

Total heat loss · THL

Measures garment-material or composite heat loss. The wildland requirement excludes cold-weather outerwear and winter liners.

Minimum THL by garment category:

Selected heat-loss requirements
Garment categoryMinimum THL
Wildland garment material/composite500 W/m²
Technical rescue garment with liquid barrier400 W/m²

Wildland thermal performance

Measures radiant protection, vertical-flame response and thermal shrinkage.

Radiant protection: cal/cm²; char length: mm; afterflame: s; thermal shrinkage: %.

Optional particulate protection

Measures filtration of the specified challenge particles in wildland garment materials.

Minimum particulate filtration efficiency: 70%.

Durability and garment design

Measures material and seam strength and cleaning dimensional change; covers sizing, closures, interfaces and labels.

Strength: N. Dimensional change: %. Certification covers the declared garment category and optional protection claims.
