EN 469

Protective clothing for firefighting activities

Requirements & test methods

EN 469 evaluates firefighting clothing through thermal, mechanical, liquid-protection and physiological requirements.

ISO 15025

Tests the outer face, innermost lining and structural seams before and after cleaning.

EN ISO 14116 Index 3. Afterflame ≤ 2 s; flame spread, debris, holes and seam opening are also assessed.

ISO 9151 / ISO 6942

Measures flame and radiant heat transfer through the clothing assembly. The radiant test uses 40 kW/m²; HTI24 and RHTI24 measure the time to a 24 °C calorimeter rise.

X1 or X2, determined by the lower achieved thermal level.

Heat-transfer thresholds
ResultX1X2
Flame: HTI24≥ 9 s≥ 13 s
Flame: HTI24 − HTI12≥ 3 s≥ 4 s
Radiation: RHTI24≥ 10 s≥ 18 s
Radiation: RHTI24 − RHTI12≥ 3 s≥ 4 s

ISO 12127-1 / ISO 17493

Tests contact heat at 250 °C for Level 2, and oven heat at 180 °C for 5 min.

Level 2 contact-heat threshold ≥ 10 s. Oven test: no ignition or melting and shrinkage ≤ 5%.

Mechanical strength

Measures outer material and structural seam strength after cleaning, plus residual tensile strength after radiant-heat exposure.

Outer tensile strength ≥ 450 N; structural seams ≥ 300 N; tear force ≥ 30 N; residual tensile strength ≥ 450 N.

ISO 6530

Tests 30% sulfuric acid and undiluted o-xylene at 20 ± 2 °C, with a 10 s application.

No penetration to the innermost surface and repellency ≥ 80% for each liquid.

ISO 811 / ISO 11092

Measures water penetration pressure and water-vapor resistance of the layers or assembly.

Water penetration: Y1 or Y2. Water-vapor resistance: Z1 or Z2.

Moisture performance grades
MarkingResult
Y1Water penetration pressure < 20 kPa
Y2Water penetration pressure ≥ 20 kPa
Z130 < Ret ≤ 45 m²·Pa/W
Z2Ret ≤ 30 m²·Pa/W

Dimensional stability

Measures dimensional change of each material layer after cleaning.

Within ±3% for woven materials and ±5% for knitted materials.
