EN 342

Clothing ensembles and garments for protection against cold

Requirements & test methods

EN 342 evaluates clothing ensembles for cold environments at or below −5 °C through manikin insulation, air permeability and optional water resistance.

ISO 15831

Measures insulation of the complete clothing combination on a moving thermal manikin, using the parallel calculation model.

Minimum Icler: 0.265 m²·K/W, with the tested underclothing configuration stated.

Activity, wind and exposure

Estimates heat balance for different air speeds and exposure durations.

Example: Icler = 0.310 m²·K/W; moving wearer at 115 W/m².

Example of wind and exposure effects
Air speed8-hour exposure1-hour exposure
0.4 m/s−2 °C−18 °C
3 m/s+6 °C−8 °C

ISO 9237

Measures air permeability in mm/s across three classes.

Class 3: ≤ 5 mm/s.

Water resistance and moisture transfer

Optional assessment of water penetration and water-vapor resistance.

Water pressure in Pa; water-vapor resistance in m²·Pa/W.
