EN ISO 20471

High-visibility clothing requirements

Requirements & test methods

ISO 20471 evaluates clothing that makes the wearer more conspicuous to vehicle and machinery operators in daylight and under headlights.

Visible material area

Measures fluorescent and retroreflective areas on the finished garment.

Both minimum areas and garment design must meet the class. Class 1 may alternatively use 0.20 m² of combined-performance material.

Minimum visible areas
Garment classBackground material (m²)Retroreflective material (m²)
10.140.10
20.500.13
30.800.20

Color and luminance

Measures background color coordinates and luminance factor β.

Color must fall within the permitted region and meet the minimum β.

Minimum background luminance factor
Fluorescent colorMinimum β
Yellow0.70
Orange-red0.40
Red0.25

Cleaning and light exposure

Checks background color after cleaning and xenon-light exposure.

Color and luminance limits apply after the maximum declared cleaning count, or 5 cycles if unspecified.

ISO 105-X12 / ISO 105-E04

Measures staining from rubbing and perspiration on the gray scale.

Minimum staining grade: 4 for rubbing and perspiration. Perspiration color-change grade: 4.

Fabric strength

Measures tensile strength of woven materials and bursting strength of knitted outer materials.

Tensile strength ≥ 100 N in both directions. Knitted bursting strength ≥ 100 kPa at 50 cm² or ≥ 200 kPa at 7.3 cm². Coated and laminated materials: tear resistance ≥ 20 N.

ISO 11092

Measures water-vapor resistance Ret and the permeability index.

Outside the rainwear route: Ret < 5 m²·Pa/W, or a permeability index ≥ 0.15 using measured thermal resistance. Rainwear follows its applicable classification.
