EN 14058

Garments for protection against cool environments

Requirements & test methods

EN 14058 evaluates garments for cool environments above −5 °C using thermal resistance, air permeability and optional water protection.

ISO 11092

Measures thermal resistance Rct through all garment layers after pretreatment.

Rct in m²·K/W determines the class.

Thermal-resistance classes
ClassRct (m²·K/W)
10.06 ≤ Rct < 0.12
20.12 ≤ Rct < 0.18
30.18 ≤ Rct < 0.25
4Rct ≥ 0.25

ISO 9237

Measures air permeability for outdoor use at 100 Pa over a 20 cm² test area.

Air permeability in mm/s determines the class.

Air-permeability classes
ClassAP (mm/s)
1> 100
2> 5 to ≤ 100
3≤ 5

Water protection and breathability

Applies to garments claiming resistance to water penetration.

Water penetration resistance ≥ 8,000 Pa. Clothing layers excluding underwear: Ret < 55 m²·Pa/W.

ISO 15831

Measures insulation of the clothing assembly and reference garments on a moving thermal manikin.

Required for Class 4; optional for Classes 1–3. Icler is expressed in m²·K/W for the tested layers.

Outer-material strength

Measures tear resistance of woven outer layers and bursting strength of knitted layers.

Tear resistance ≥ 20 N in both directions, excluding stretch and knitted materials. Knitted bursting strength ≥ 100 kPa at 50 cm² or ≥ 200 kPa at 7.3 cm².
