Tear properties of fabrics

Requirements & test methods

ISO 13937-2 measures the force needed to propagate a single tear in a trouser-shaped fabric specimen.

Trouser-shaped specimen

Specimen: 200 ± 2 mm × 50 ± 1 mm, with a 100 ± 1 mm central slit. Each leg is held in a separate grip.

At least five specimens per direction. Tear-end mark: 25 ± 1 mm from the uncut end.

Tear propagation

Standard grip separation: 100 mm. Extension rate: 100 mm/min.

Tear force in N, by direction and conditioning, with abnormal tear paths recorded.

Tear force

Measures resistance to extending an existing cut.

Acceptance limits come from the applicable clothing specification.
