EN 1149-5

Electrostatic dissipative protective clothing

Requirements & test methods

EN 1149-5 sets material and design requirements for clothing that helps prevent incendiary electrostatic discharges as part of an earthed system.

EN 1149-1 / EN 1149-3

Measures surface resistance or induction charge decay after cleaning.

At least one criterion must be met.

Alternative material criteria
Measured propertyEN 1149-5:2018 criterion
Surface resistance — geometric mean≤ 2.5 × 10⁹ Ω on at least one surface
Half-decay time t50 — geometric mean< 4 s, EN 1149-3 Method 2
Shielding factor S — arithmetic mean> 0.2, EN 1149-3 Method 2

Conductive thread spacing

Measures the spacing of conductive fibers in stripe or grid patterns.

Maximum spacing: 10 mm in at least one direction throughout the material.

Earthing and coverage

Checks the garment as part of an earthed system.

Resistance to earth < 10⁸ Ω. Coverage of non-dissipative materials during normal movement.

Cleaning durability

Checks dissipative performance after the declared cleaning procedure.

5 wash-and-dry cycles if no count is declared. Non-cleanable, single-use garments are tested new.
