ASTM F955

Heat transfer through protective materials exposed to molten substances

Requirements & test methods

ASTM F955-15(2021) evaluates heat transfer and material response when protective-clothing materials are exposed to a controlled pour of molten substances.

Molten-metal exposure

Pours 1,000 g ± 10% of metal from 305 mm onto a specimen at 70° to horizontal.

Pour temperatures by substance:

Standard molten-substance test conditions
SubstanceMinimum pour temperature
Eutectic iron1,538 °C / 2,800 °F
Aluminum alloy 1100760 °C / 1,400 °F
Brass alloy 8751,149 °C / 2,100 °F

Heat transfer

Two copper sensors record transmitted heat for 45 s.

Transferred energy (J/cm²) and time to the predicted second-degree burn threshold using the Stoll comparison.

Material response

Examines sticking, charring, shrinkage and breakopen after cooling.

Each response is rated on a 1–5 scale.
