ASTM F2733

Flame-resistant rainwear for industrial fire hazards

Requirements & test methods

ASTM F2733-21 specifies minimum flame, thermal, physical and waterproof performance criteria for rainwear used around hydrocarbon and petrochemical fire hazards.

Waterproofness and seams

Tests rainwear material and seams separately under water pressure.

Reusable rainwear: initially and after 5 cleaning-and-drying cycles.

Waterproof test conditions
Tested constructionWater pressureTest method / duration
Rainwear material207 kPa / 30 psiASTM D3393
Rainwear seams20.7 kPa / 3 psiAATCC 127; 2 minutes

ASTM F1930

Tests at least 3 standardized rainwear coveralls after 1 cleaning-and-drying cycle, over the specified cotton undergarments.

Predicted total, second-degree and third-degree burn (%):

Manikin fire-exposure conditions
ParameterSpecified exposure
Heat flux84 ± 4 kW/m²
Exposure duration3 ± 0.1 seconds

ASTM D6413

Tests each rainwear layer initially and after 5 cleaning-and-drying cycles. Non-cleanable disposable rainwear is tested as received.

Char length, afterflame, melting and dripping.

Strength and vapor transmission

Measures trapezoidal tear resistance; knitted or stretch-woven substrates may use the specified bursting test.

Tear force: N; bursting pressure: kPa. Optional inverted-cup testing measures vapor transfer per unit area and time.
