ASTM F1891

Arc- and flame-resistant rainwear

Requirements & test methods

ASTM F1891-25 establishes thermal, physical and waterproof performance requirements for rainwear used by workers exposed to momentary electric arcs and open flames.

Electric-arc exposure

Determines the rainwear assembly’s arc rating and records ignition, afterflame, breakopen, melting, dripping and shrinkage.

Arc rating in cal/cm²; response observations at these exposure levels:

Arc-response observations
Exposure levelRequired observations
At least 1 × the arc rating2 typical exposures
At least 2 × the arc rating2 typical exposures

ASTM D6413

Measures vertical-flame behavior of the specified rainwear layers and cleaning condition.

Char length (mm or in.), afterflame (s), melting and dripping.

Cleaning durability

Assesses physical performance before and after 5 cleanings using the specified care procedure.

Initial and post-cleaning results for the rainwear material.

Waterproofness and strength

Measures leakage through material and seams, tear strength and material mass.

Water pressure: kPa or psi; hold time: s or min; tear force: N or lbf; mass: g/m² or oz/yd².
