Requirements & test methods

ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 defines design, material, performance and labeling requirements for high-visibility safety apparel used to improve worker conspicuity in US workplaces.

Garment type and class

Type O: off-road work. Type R: roadway work. Type P: public-safety work. Classification uses garment design and visible areas.

Both area minimums apply. Smallest Type R size: background may reduce to 540 in² for Class 2 or 1,000 in² for Class 3; reflective areas remain unchanged.

Supplemental Class E

Covers qualifying trousers, bib overalls and other lower-body items.

Class E combined with Class 2 or Class 3 apparel gives a Class 3 ensemble.

Color, reflection and durability

Tests background brightness and retroreflection before and after conditioning.

Results include color coordinates, luminance factor and reflective performance.
